This film is a Cold War submarine
thriller inspired by real events. It is based on the true story of
Russia's first nuclear ballistic missile submarine, which suffered a
malfunction in its nuclear reactor on its 1961 maiden voyage in the North
Atlantic. Harrison Ford plays the ship's unyielding Captain Vostrikov who
races against time to prevent a Chernobyl-like nuclear explosion which
threatens not only the lives of his crew, but has the potential to ignite
a world war between the super powers.
Director Kathryn Bigelow spent four years researching on the story, including trips to Russia to interview the survivors of the
K-19 incident.
In addition to the Juliett filming off the coast of Halifax, location shooting took place in Russia and other locations in Canada to include Gimli, Manitoba. Some of Juliett's equipment and gear was temporarily removed to create sets for interior scenes shot in Toronto.
The film also features actors Peter Sarsgaard, Joss Ackland, John Shrapnel and Tim Woodward.
