Juliett 484 and Atlantic Hemlock berthed at the Government Wharf in Shelburne Nova Scotia

Present location in Shelburne N 43 45.1 W 65 19.2

Received afternoon forecast from Commander's Weather. Expecting intense LOW pressure system to come across Gulf of Maine on Wednesday with S 45 - 50kts winds ahead of the LOW. After discussion with Capt. Lance Julian, Capt. Dave Ellin and Capt. Fernand Martin decision made to remain at Shelburne until LOW passes over and depart at first available weather window, approximately Wed evening for Cape Cod Canal. This will be confirmed after tomorrow morning's Weather Forecast.

While in Shelburne, crew topped up on diesel, stores and water and doubled up on lines in preparation for strong winds tomorrow. All sub systems are running well, Satellite Phone in good order and Hemlock still within cellphone range.

2230, Wed March 27, 2002

Juliett 484 and Hemlock berthed at Shelburne, Nova Scotia

After receiving latest weather forecasts, Lance, Dave, Harry and Fernand confered at 2030 this evening and decision was made to depart Shelburne tomorrow morning at 0500 for Cape Cod Canal.

Will confirm tow departure tomorrow morning with call to Joanne DeSimone. I will be departing at 0600 from Halifax heading for Cape Cod.

I will try to e-mail status of tow from the road as often as possible. I will also keep Lance, Joanne and Frank up to date with phone calls.

I will be in touch with the sub via Satellite Phone and will provide for them the latest weather forecasts.

This morning Lance, Dave, Harry and Fernand confirmed last night's decision to depart for Cape Cod.

0505 This morning last line off and tow under way from Shelburne heading for Cape Cod

Time to Pilot Station in RI to be advised.

2030 Eastern Time, Thursday, March 28, 2002

1800 N 43 03.1 W 66 36.1 Juliett 484 / Hemlock crossing the Gulf of Maine, making 8.3kts on a course of 252.

At present speed, Tug & Tow expect to be at Cape Cod Canal Pilot Station at 1800 Friday, March 29th.

I am now in Boston and will be at Cape Cod for the crossing of the canal.

Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 1300 ET.

All times below are for Saturday, March 30.

0225 N 41 26.1 W 71 03.9 Tow line from Hemlock to Juliett 484 parted. Hemlock recovered remainder of line and prepared to connect to Emergency Tow Bridle. Tow Line Broke near Main Towing Bridle.

0250 Tug and Sub Crew secured the Emergency Tow Bridle.

0300 I Received call from sub that tow line between tug and sub parted at 0225. Immediately Notified Lance Julian and Ship's Agent.

0400 Support Tug "PUMA" from Fall River underway to assist tug/tow.

0600 As a precautionary Measure, notified USCG Point Judith Station of tow status. Received and forwarded latest LOCAL and Commander's Weather to sub. Contacted Frank Lennon and gave update for postponement of receiving party.

0700 Ship's Agent notifed Customs, Linesmen, Crane of postponement of arrival until further notice.

0745 N 41 27.1 W 71 06.76 Tug and Sub Crew completed transfer of Hemlock's Fwd Spectra towing line to rear drum and connected this tow line to the sub's "soft" portion of the emergency tow line.

0752 N 41 27.1 W 71 07.00 Received call from Sub and Tug that they were underway again. Notified USCG of status. USCG dispatched Helo to monitor tow as a precaution.

0800 Support Tug "PUMA" on station with tug/tow

0835 USCG helo fly by

1245 N 41 23.1 W 71 20.2 Juliett 484 / Hemlock approaching Newport Pilot Station. Once pilot boards, situation will be assessed and course of action decided on.

1300 Ship's Agent confirmed Diver on standby if required to assist.

Throughout this entire event, Lance Julian, Nick Spetiotis, Tug Crew, Sub Crew, Ship's Agent, ATL Operations, Assist Tug, Pilot, USCG were updated approx. every hour.

Will update further as information becomes available.

2030 ET Saturday, March 30, 2002

All times below are Eastern Time for Saturday, March 30, 2002

1700 After engaging the services of a diver, the Pilot and Tug crew recovered the broken tow line and the main chain bridle back onto the deck of the Hemlock and began proceeding towards an anchorage buoy for the night on orders from the Pilot.

1933 N 41 33.3 W 71 19.9 Hemlock and Juliett 484 secure on Navy Anchorage Buoy.

Tomorrow morning the Pilot will board at 0600 and take the tow to Berth 1, Prov Port. ETA at Berth 1 approximately 0930.

Linesmen and crane have been ordered for tomorrow morning and Customs and Immigration have been notified.
